We hope you realize the importance of individuals contacting their MPs and MPPS and expressing support for the various federal and provincial pension reforms currently being discussed.
Without that support these reforms will not go forward due to the strong opposing/lobbying efforts of factions that see these changes in a negative light. In virtually every case if the 'between parties' political process does not interfere, then the banks, employers, insurance companies, etc. very emphatically voice their opposition and unfortunately the politicians tend to listen. These factions also work full time at opposing such change and employ capable professionals in supporting their aims. While you and I might see the reform of pension legislation as long-overdue and a much needed response to the currently irresponsible and unjust situation, those opposing such change are determined to keep things as they are. DIPAC appreciates and needs your annual $10 dues payment to finance our continuing efforts as an organization. But even more important is the need for your personal contact with your MP and MPP via a brief well written letter. When asked, MPs and MPPs indicate that such messages carry weight, and the lack of such messages indicates that the electorate (you) has assigned low priority to an issue. They are especially impressed when 2-3 individual constituents take the time to visit them at their riding office and discuss the issues face to face. Currently Bill C-501 is at the committee level in the federal legislature. This bill addresses the injustices being suffered by individuals such as Nortel employees and pensioners caught up in the bankruptcy and insolvency processes. These people stand to lose 25-35% of their expected pension benefits, and this could well happen to you and I. Your federal MP is/should be aware of Bill C-501. Likewise Bill-120 is currently active in the Ontario legislative arena, with consultations underway with various stakeholders. Ideally this bill will upgrade many aspect of provincial legislation long over due for reform. Your provincial MPP is/should be aware of Bill-120 and needs your input on the critical need for the reform that it must include to be meaningful. How about you getting involved?? Want some help? Drop us an email.
